These are short courses introducing the student to reading Egyptian hieroglyphs to the point where some familiarity with standard words and phrases typically found in museum pieces can be read and understood. Theses are not full grammar courses. You can take one or both courses. They are not prerequisites for either of the two longer courses in reading hieroglyphs (Hoch and Allen).
These are full grammar courses. No previous knowlewdge of Egyptian is required. There are no prerequisites The two authors, James E. Hoch and James P. Allen, have rather different approaches to the language but the end result, when translating from Egyptian to English, is very similar. There is no particular order to these courses, and you can get by very well with just picking one or the other.
There are no prerequisites but some previous knowledge of Egyptian is assumed. THere is no sequence to the reading courses.
All GlyphStudy courses operate by e-mail. As stated above, you must be a member of GlyphStudy to participate. Students post their homework via e-mail, usually once every two weeks but sometimes once a week, depending on the workload. There is usually a break at the end of the year of several weeks' duration. GlyphStudy moderators set homework due dates, monitor the e-mails containing homework, and publish collations of the homework for easy reference. Questions are welcome and especially students within a course are encouraged to help each other by answering as many questions as they can, because that will help them become more familiar with the material themselves.
